Evacuees Lessons

It is highly recommended that your students have some knowledge of the topic prior to taking part in the lesson.

These lesson can work well following Air Raid lesson as families and citizens emerge from their shelters to face the devastation.

Using tableau as way into the activity and responding to given sets of circumstances the students will learn to assess a serious situation, to empathise with others and to make contributions to helping one's neighbour. The lessons can be done purely as Drama/ Interactive pieces but they have also been extended into Literacy for Primary School Teachers.

There are 6 Lessons-  Details Are As Follows:

LESSON 1

Visualisation Circle Exercise Emerging From the Shelters - Setting Up Family Characters, Tableau, Thought Tracking, Reading Scenarios, Presentation Use Of Starter lines Group Improvisation and Discussion, Letter Writing To Friends and Relatives, Sharing Written Work

LESSON 2

Safety In the Countryside Discussion, Corridor of Thought, Exploring the Emotional Response To Evacuation, Packing bags, Making Lists, Using Real Examples of Clothing Lists, Comparisons To Present Day, Creating Confrontation Scenes as emotions run high.

LESSON 3

Going To the Station - Movement Section and Tableaux, Movement Presentation suitable for Assembly Piece (Video included), Use of Pre-Recorded Voice Overs to stimulate writing/improvisation tasks.

LESSON 4

Making and designing Posters, Host Family Scenes, Arriving In the Countryside, Responding To Problems, Use again of Voice Recording materials - Listening and Reading

LESSON 5

The New Family - First Impressions from all involved, Creating Tensions within Scenes, showing work and giving feedback.

LESSON 6

Listening and Scripting, Hot Seating, Discussion, Post card/letters- writing or improvisation. Going Home - comparing emotions.

 

 

 

THE VOICE RECORDING CLIPS

Your students will have great fun creating their own voice overs for this - an excellent way to do something a bit different to consolidate learning and to really enter the worlds of with the child evacuees of the time.

There are 5 different sections of the Voice Overs as follows:

On The Train - Evacuees talking together - Into Scripting and Recording

At the Hall - Evacuees being allocated to families - Into Scripting and Recording

First Impressions - Into Diary Entries

Host Children First Impressions - Scripts

Evacuees Thoughts On The Host Families - Into writing Postcards

The Dialogues can be used as the basis for Interviews and even making a Radio programme.
