Adaptation for a classroom setting.
Medieval - Market Place
Suitable for age 8-12. This lesson is set in Medieval Times in a Market place setting. If students are studying the period it is a very good, lively yet structured lesson which will ensure successful learning outcomes of the topic. Students will consider the jobs, trades and skills of the people and the goods that they produced. They will visualise the market place, it's atmosphere and some of the more detailed aspects of it. Finally they will produce the market and introduce some dramatic tension to provide intrigue and focus.
Key Drama skills are occupational mime, mime, improvisation in groups and whole class level, point of tension, use of tableau.
This lesson has the whole class working together and students get really involved in their roles and tasks which encourages confidence in quieter students while still allowing more vocal students the chance to become very vocal during the tension scenario.
If your class like doing plays you may be interested in our Medieval play The Jesters' Tales (see Longer Plays). This is a partially scripted play but can be used in a totally improvised way complete with music suggestions.
